Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil has almost achieved a cult status in the beauty world. It had been on my wishlist for a long time, until I finally gave in and purchased it from Sephora.
How much does it cost?
Comes in 2 sizes – 0.5 oz/15 mL for $55; 1.18 oz/35 mL for $105.
It also comes in a gift set with another very popular Sunday Riley product called the Good Genes All in One Lactic Acid Treatment. The set is called Power Couple Duo – Total Transformation Kit. I purchased the set, as it seemed like a better deal. You can find this at Sephora.
This review is for Luna sleeping night oil only as I feel this way you can really determine which product gives better results. Although both products can be used in conjunction, I mostly just used the night oil on its own.
What it claims?
Luna sleeping night oil is for all skin types and is considered to be the “next generation” retinoid oil that helps in improving skin plumpness as well as fights the appearance of wrinkles. Continuous use also leads to clearer skin in terms of reducing pores, redness, and an overall younger looking skin. “It works throughout the night to deliver a more youthful, luminous, even toned skin in the morning”. It is also a cruelty free product which gets it brownie points in my book.
My experience
First of all, I must state that I have super dry skin so I am always on the look out for face oils and creamy moisturizers. I believe, nothing fazes my skin, even if I were to douse my face in a bucket full of oil, I would probably still have dry patches left ha! Anyhow, I got on the bandwagon of trying out sleeping oils and nothing really satisfied me until Ms. Riley’s Luna showed up!
The consistency is very similar to that of any oil – which is thick but super liquidy as well. It does have a blue tint – which disappears as you rub it into your skin.
There is a subtle sheen to it when applied initially, which also means it does not get absorbed into the skin right away. But that is totally fine, as it has to work the “magic” overnight.
The slighly oily feel does not bother me at all as I feel it keeps my skin hydrated. Now, I did not have very problematic skin before, but dryness had always been an issue, and some pigmentation and sun/age spots that bothered me. I have been applying it every night for the past 4 months and have been super impressed with the results.
I have started using less and less makeup as I do not feel the need to cover anything. There is an overall brightness on my face and my skin just feels 10 times smoother than it was before. I have also noticed the fine lines on my forehead have started to almost disappear. This is due to the presence of trans-retinol (a key ingredient in Luna) that aims to reduce wrinkles and fine lines as well as gives a smoother look to the skin.
The oil does have a slight scent to it, but it dissipates within the first 5 minutes. Also, retinol and retinoid based products do tend to make skin sensitive, so using sunscreen is very important during the day. Also a word of caution to anyone pregnant or trying to get pregnant, this is not a suitable product because of retinoids in it.
So here is a little summary to make it easier for you to decide whether to try Luna or not.
Pros
- Skin feels hydrated and plumped.
- Perfect for dry skin but suitable for all skin types.
- Gentle on the skin.
- Brightens the face by reducing hyperpigmentation.
- Diminishes fine lines.
Cons
- Price is quite steep at $105 for the full size.
- Not completely fragrance free.
- Retinol based products make skin extra sensitive.
- Blue tint comes from a dye, so it is not a natural color.
Verdict
Overall, I have been very satisfied with the results of Luna Sleeping Night Oil. And I would highly recommend it as well as repurchase it myself.
