Everything inside our box. Already loving the theme of the month – learning about individuality.
Our Swimming Through The Sea Guide for the month! 🙂 I am a huge fan of these extremely detailed instruction booklets that are exclusively designed by the Kids Night In team! Kudos to them for creating such colorful & creative informational booklets!
The theme this month was all about learning about differences and similarities amongst us.
Board Book – You Be You By Linda Kranz
A heartwarming story about little Adri (fish) who sets out to explore the ocean and has no idea how colorful his world is. It is all about Adri discovering the variety of fish in the deep blue sea – highlighting the differences and similarities between them.
The positive message behind the story for little readers is to be yourself and share your unique talents with the world as we all are different. To say that my kids and I loved this book would be an understatement! A very important topic shared in a heartwarmingly fun and easy way! 🙂
Activity # 1: Create Different Colored Fish
After reading the book, we were charged up to begin the plethora of activities related to the same topic! A super fun and hands-on activity for the kiddos – we used the model magic clay and divided it into 4 sections.
Added in the color of our choice and made them each into fish shapes.
My almost 4 years old was thrilled to tie the blindfold (included with the box) – she had to figure out if she can tell apart the fishes without peeking. What a fun way to understand an important concept. 🙂
We had to then put all the little fishes together and form one big fish! In the end, the kids learned, that it was still the same model magic, but just different color and size!
Activity #2: Braille Challenge for Little Ones
Next, we learned about Louis Braille and how the braille alphabets came about.
Practicing the braille challenge and trying to distinguish the different letters. While she was not able to figure out the letters, it was still a fun experience in terms of learning something new!
Activity # 3: Drawing Challenge
Next, we learned about Joni Eareckson Tada – an amazing woman who had a serious accident and lost her ability to use her arms and legs. So she learned to paint and draw through her mouth.
So we headed to draw just like Joni. 🙂 What a hands-on way to learn about the differences present amongst us. As well as, be able to understand where those differences are coming from was this activity all about!
Activity # 4: Obstacle Course Challenge
The next challenge was about setting up an obstacle course for your little one to complete while learning about different physical abilities.
This challenge was driven by Wilma Rudolph – who had to wear a brace due to getting polio as a little girl. And how she worked so hard to regain the use of her leg and became an inspiration for many!
So we applied the same concept and in round # 1, we used both our legs to jump off our very (small) obstacle course. And in round #2, I tied the scarf around my daughter’s legs to see how she can complete the obstacle course without having the full use of her legs.
There was a more challenging obstacle course for the older kids in the guide booklet! So no worries, Kids Night In ensures inspiration and creativity for kids of all ages!
My 2-year-old couldn’t wait to get her hands on the dessert fast enough! But I just wanted to make sure that we follow the activities in order and reward the kids with the dessert at the end. 🙂
It was super easy to whip up, and my older one was very proud of herself for helping out in crushing the graham crackers. 🙂
Looks delicious and ready to be served.
Devouring her dessert. 🙂
What a phenomenal month by Kids Night In! As a parent, it is extremely important for me to make sure that my kids understand the bigger picture and know how to “you be you” while developing a sense of empathy and inclusion of others at the same time! And this box did just that in a very fun, creative and inspiring way! You really can’t go wrong with a Kids Night In Box. High-quality materials, instructions and tons of entertaining activities for the kids that make them think outside the box!
